A Female Artist's Perspective

Recently I read an article about a man's opinion on dating his artist girlfriend. It made me take a look at who I am as an artist and how I relate to people. I'd like for a moment to speak frankly, quite frankly.

I love color. I look for patterns in everything so nothing is superficially done. I like to take my time and must be able to see the end or at least what I think is the end before I begin. Of course the end is always better than I expected because I believe God steps in and says, "Oh, a vessel is doing something, now I can make something happen." I believe artists are conduits for God.

Everything becomes a canvas from the make-up I apply just to create color on my face to the plate of food that must be presented to eat. It's all about passion. Which means that a true artist will do things from the heart. Speaking from a woman's point of view, a female artist is about the object of her attention. Whether it be a piece of paper or the one she is with. There are no comparisons only the moment at hand. Each work is it's own baby and she doesn't like picking favorites.

When in the company of an artist one should feel like the only one in the room. No conversations of others will come up unless brought up by the other person. And there are no quiet thoughts unless she has her eyes closed while dreaming. Don't be surprised if every detail of you is etched into her brain for recall at any given time. That slight smile can become an inspiration for a great romance novel, a beautiful painting, or interpreted for a dance of passion.

Now on the flip side personally: while creating I can go for hours/days without eating, brushing teeth, or changing clothes. I can look tore up from the floor up but what I'm creating won't look that way. I don't want to see you and you don't want to smell me, lol. I'm social and a loner all at once. This I don't understand at all so how can I explain it. I love people and doing activities with people but can sometimes find myself alone in a room full of people. But know that I'm observing at all times.

Yes, I can take too long by your standards just looking at the clouds. But understand I'm desperately trying to drink in the moment, to burn it into my memory in case I never get to see it again. Everything is felt deeply, love as well as pain. But even scars on the heart become a pattern, a design in the end to be expressed in some way. So in the end it too can become something beautiful to look at, or at least intriguing.

Personalized Art

I'm almost finished with a project for a client who has an interest in track and field. Finishing this project while the Olympic games are happening is even more enjoyable for me. The client purchased a new home with new furnishings. Red flag, what about all that wall space? Well, he immediately contacted me to find out whether I could do a picture of a relay in cloth. I love a good challenge and so I took the job.

I've made long distance commissions before and find that asking for paint swatches from their local hardware store gives me the chance to make an even bigger impression with their art being more personalized.  I also have them measure the space so that the art will take up all the emptiness around and fill it with color.

Below is a picture journal of the progress, I will submit another entry for the finished product. Enjoy!

Monarch Butterfly & Lady Bugs

Recently I decided to participate in a group that is very crafty. The project we're currently working on is a quilt like piece. Each person has a square that has branches of a tree on it and each person gets to decorate their square however they want with whatever they want. Well, since I like doing things with cloth I decided to paint my leaves and add some little extras on my square in cloth. So far it looks like this.

Nothing is secured yet so the lady bugs may be in different spots in the pics. I'm not finished yet, but I really wanted to share! As with most of my pieces, the bugs are one piece of cloth each as well as the butterfly. So, the body, antennae, and wings are all one piece of cloth - not many parts secured together.

Set the Mood

Wall art and decor is important in your house because, art helps set the general mood of it's surroundings. Art decor also shows your style and allows you to make your house a home, customizing each room with a painting or picture. Adding style color and pizzazz to each wall will give your home character. Before you hang those paintings and pictures make sure to choose the mood setting that you want for your house, keeping style and color in mind. Each room should be done differently to show what the room is used for. Whether it be the dining room or the kids play room, it's easy setting the mood.

There are many different moods that your house can feel like, due to wall art and decor. When choosing a mood think of picture placement, and the color scheme you want to use. Different colors can make the room say let's rock or time to relax. If you want the living room to feel warm and inviting, you should have an earth toned colored wall, with pictures hung above the couch, that are bright and colorful. If you want to make the kids room seem Fun and happy have a bright colored wall with pictures of cartoons hung everywhere.

The style of the room is also important when making the decision of what kind of art decor you should place in the room and where you should place it. If you have modern styled furniture, in a dark color you should hang modern neutral paintings and black and white portraits, wall art and decor is used to tie a room together and show class and sophistication in this style of room. Style of furniture and the placement of furniture is a big part of making the decision of what kind of art to have.

When hanging, or painting pictures in a room, placement is the last decision yet the simplest to make. Placing pictures on a bare wall or even over a couch will catch the eye and start a conversation when you have company. When painting a picture onto a wall it is always good to first draw the picture out with a pencil first, this way if you change your mind it won't mean a repaint of the walls. With a picture or piece of artwork above furniture or on a blank wall, either hammering a nail into the wall or using thumb tacks, is the easiest and most common way.

When decorating a house wall art and decor is the best way to spice things up or cool things off. With a little style and color coordination you will make your home feel the way you choose. Bringing conversation and excitement art work not only expresses the type of person you art, but also shows your kid of style.. Art work is the simplest way to change an entire room, by placing a picture on a bare wall you have added something new for the eye to catch.

Abstract Canvas Wall Art For a Modern Home

Turquoise Twist by JaMax

What else would look good in a modern minimalistic home but an abstract canvas wall art. Even though art trends keep changing, abstract art is going to be popular for a very long time. Artists sometimes change the mediums used for abstract art. Back then oil paint was often used, but these days artists use acrylic, and other mixed media like screens, wood, sand, and even metal.

Mixed medium abstracts are gaining popularity too but classic abstract will remain trendy for a long time. Abstract art can be found in single piece paintings or in canvas art sets of 2 to 8 or more pieces. Canvas sets are very interesting and can add to the modernism of a home because they aren't conventional or traditional.

Another option for abstract canvas wall art are minimalist pieces which stick to one to 2 colors. The designs on these types of paintings are...well...minimalist and very simple. You can find minimalist paintings in black and white just like modern black and white photographs. These are perfect for a streamlined and clean minimalist look.

When searching for canvas wall art for your home or for a friend, take note of the home or room's color theme. Avoid getting paintings that have the exact same color as the wall so you can create interesting contrast. Get a color that is present in other decor pieces in the room like the rug, throw pillows, etc. Use a color wheel if that will help you choose an appropriate color.
Abstract canvas can be minimalist, in surrealism style, neoclassic, expressionist, or mixed media. If you want to get a painting that will last, get oil paintings on gallery wrapped canvas. These canvas wall art are painted on the best quality canvas that also look great without being framed. You can hang it straight out of the box, especially if they come ready to hang.
Find a wide collection of canvas wall art at EverythingWallArt.com and discoverer countless choices of wall art, in different painting styles.

The First Piece

In 1993 I experienced an accident that put me in a full-leg cast. I had just moved and was short on cash, not a good thing when Christmas is just around the corner. It was during this time that I experienced a dream that changed my life thus far. I had a dream of being in an office building checking on my art placements from floor to floor. When I woke up I was intrigued by what and how the art looked. It was cloth on canvas in various abstract shapes and colors.

I started calling around art galleries to ask if they had such pieces, describing what I had seen in my dream. Call after call I received a negative response as to anyone ever seeing what I had described. That's when I decided to try and recreate what I had experienced. Since it was Christmas time and my mother is a collector of mother/child pictures (Madonnas) I decided to create one out of cloth. That gift was my first official cloth sculpture.

Since that time I have created sunsets, flowers, children, even lovers in cloth. I welcome you to view and even own  Unique Cloth Sculptures by JaMax, http://www.clothsculptures.com/. During this blog, I look forward to sharing articles of interest concerning my work as well as art topics in general. Once again, Welcome to Blogs by Unique Cloth Sculptures by JaMax.

Life is Like...

Lately I've been struggling to work on my art. Having balance to live life, care about others, write, self-maintain, and create, how does one do all that? My life is not in order but I do have small micro goals I try to obtain each day. Sometimes it includes art, sometimes it doesn't. I'm just keeping it real. This thing called life (yes Prince fans I said it) is a mystery and complex and simple and obtainable all at once. How can it be all of those things? Your input is welcomed. Until then here's a thought -

Life is like a Peach Swirl
  • It looks confusing but it's really only 1 piece of cloth.
  • It's together but it's got a loose string.
  • It can appear complex but it's just a painting twisted up.
  • It may appear to have frayed edges but it's Not coming a loose.

Mistakes to Avoid on Valentine's Day

One in five guys will text their loving message on Valentine’s Day and one in ten will take to email. That doesn't even factor Facebook and Twitter professions of love. As sweet as 140 characters can be, old-school letters are more romantic. One survey found the obvious: women would be disappointed by an electronic gesture of affection.
Why it’s bad: In terms of effort, it’s minimal. It also brings a third party into your affair: your P.D.A. (your Personal Digital Assistant, not public displays of affection). It should be a given to turn it off during your candlelit dinner, but using it to profess love is detached.
The fix: Buy a blank card or take a photo of the two of you and write a message on the back. It doesn't have to be long, it can even be a quote from your favorite song. But in this technological world, handwriting holds a certain intimacy. If words just aren't your thing, make a mix CD and write out the songs in pen. Your music choices will do
